Description
Rare African American Self Taught Folk Artist (Anderson) A. Johnson (1915-1998) of New Port News, Virginia. This signed Folk Art Painting, self portrait is simply outstanding and is highly significant. Painted on cardboard, which is typical of that he painted on what he could find at the time and afford. At the age of eight he was a street preacher after receiving a message from God, As life went on he had a medical bills that he was unable to pay for and divine inspiration pushed him to began painting and selling them to maintain the church. 1970s he changed his home into a Faith Mission where he had services every Sunday. Important Collector grade example. Current display at Colonial Williamsburg Museum in the Folk Art area. Condition is outstanding with fine color details. Paint on cardboard. Size 31" Tall x 20" Wide
