Description

Monumental example of Alabama stoneware, this 9-gallon meat jar is just incredible. The eye appeal, folks you aren’t going to get any better for utilitarian stoneware. The graceful loop handles concentric line decoration paired with a mature lime alkaline glaze is just outstanding. This food storage jar is from the 1840s to 1850s time. And would have been used only a large plantation or farm more than likely. We believe this jar to be made on Settlement Rd. area in Randolph County Alabama. This is one you just really can’t say enough about because it’s just that impressive. As for the condition of this jar, it did have a little small inch and a half area that was chipped out and re glued back in, this is not a repair, and no color blending was done, see pictures. A few little insignificant glaze flakes around the rim edge which is typical form the wear-use and age of this jar. No hairline cracks or repairs present. Folks, if you collect southern stoneware this example must be on your radar and the odds of finding another jar again are slim to none and this makes this a truly Cagle top shelf example. Honestly, folks find another one, it’s going to be very difficult to do so. One other example is known in a current museum. Standing: 18 1/4" Tall x 18 1/2" Wide
