Southern Pottery, Primitives, & Folk Art
Lot 33:
Fine Texas, Duncan Shop Stoneware Three Gallon Jar 1860’s. One of the great potters of the South. Family trained in Edgefield South Carolina and migrated to Alabama then onward to middle Texas. This jar has a fine ash glaze with an outstanding form and strong traits of Edgefield form. The jar has identical form to the Duncan family’s and the clay body matches the identical to the clay found in Bastrop County Texas. The jar in my opinion is Texas no doubt and have had Alabama collectors look at this one and agreed it was Texas. The jar was found at a North Carolina auction and was sold as Edgefield, which it is not Edgefield stoneware. Condition is outstanding with minor glaze flake inside of the rim, very tight firing line at rim downwards 3 3/8" inches. Plug hole in base of jar filled with red color epoxy. No other condition issues, no repairs. Fresh example form a North Carolina Collection. Standing 14" Tall
