Fall Southern Pottery & Folk Art Auction
Lot 5:
Important Daniel Cribbs (1800 PA – 1891 Ala ) of Tuscaloosa Five Gallon Lug Handle Jar, slave made circa 1930-40 time period. This is a unmarked example but no doubt Cribbs piece. The jar is a crude form with two lug lifter handles and has a 5 scratched on the shoulder of the jar. This is a first for Cagle Auction Company to show a Cribbs example and is attributed to Cribbs based off a known stamped example with same form and lug handles. The jar is iron glaze which puts it to be slave made, which Daniel owned slaves which is sighted in Alabama Folk Pottery book, he was noted to own six slaves in 1860 census record. Highly sought after Alabama stoneware due to maker, time period and condition. Jar is a fresh example form a Hamilton Ala. collection and is in very good condition. Jar has some crazing lines that runs across the jar, note Not Hair lines but crazing or glaze lines. The jar is free of any hair lines or repairs. This is a great investment example with only a few known pieces marked. Fine addition in any stoneware collection. Standing
