Southern Pottery & Folk Art Auction
Lot 30:
Description
Great example of a five gallon Billy Merritt (1861-1929) churn with a great alkaline glaze and classic double handles. One handle is stamped with a 5 on the handle. This jar has a piece of the rim broken out and is correct to be a churn and we do see this from time to time to make a churn out of these pieces. This jar has a striking double dipped effect on the glaze and is very eye appealing. The churn is in overall great condition. It has a piece missing for the wooden lid and a drying/firing line at base. This jar holds water and rings true, note this is not a hairline crack. This is typical in southern wood fired pieces. No hairlines or repairs. Fresh from a South Carolina area collection. Standing 17" Tall
