Important Slave Potter Isham Hudson Alabama Signed Jar
Description
Hands down one of the most Important Alabama pots ever offered at auction or any sale being public or private this jar by Slave Potter Isham Hudson of Hickory Flatt, (Chambers County) Alabama. Signed (I.H.) Isham Hudson was a free man of color and was listed as a potter in the census at a time of when slaves were not allowed to be literate. This is a remarkable find fresh to the market from a estate in Atlanta area, unknown how the family received the jar. This is the only known intact signed jar and second known example to surface. This is a monumental example and no doubt one of the scarcest Alabama examples Cagle Auction has ever offered. Find another one. The condition is great has a couple crazing lines in the glaze. No hairlines. The jar has two very insignificant rim edge scuffs, not chips but scuffs more than likely done during the drying period or loading the kiln. Also has No repairs. This piece has a wonderful glaze and with a strong stamp I. H. The kiln-land is still retained by the Hudson Family today in Chambers Co. Alabama. The jar would make a strong statement in any southern pottery collection or museum display. Half Gallon jar.
Condition: Excellent, two very minor rim flakes No cracks or repairs
