INDIAN ARTIFACTS from the Tugaloo River Dig of 1957
Description
These Indian artifacts (shads, points, pottery tops, smoking pipe and etc.) are from the estate of a long time UGA Prof. Dr. Jean Michaels who died earlier this year. There was information in his home that documented many of these items came from the Tugaloo dig along the Tugaloo River prior to Lake Hartwell being built. There is an article in the Anderson Independent from 1957 telling about the excavation. I have not been able to prove 100% that Dr. Michaels officially participated in the dig, yet he was a senior that year at UGA during the time of the dig. It would stand to reason that he was part of the dig’s crew and found these items himself. There is also a newspaper that lined the box with these artifacts that is dated from that day and time. I had Southeastern Archaeological Services Inc. Senior Archaeologist Gerald Ledbetter look at these artifacts and he dates them to late Mississippi Tugaloo Phase around 1500 and were prior to the Cherokee Indians who occupied the site later into the 1800s.
