Southern Pottery & Folk Art Auction
Lot 46A:
Description
Fine & very sought after Lucius Jordan Signed "LJ" ( 1816-1880 ) Churn Three Gallon, of Washington County or Hancock County Georgia. This is a very rare form being in a single handle churn with a graceful LJ scratched into the churn shoulder, note this is the first single handle churn we have offered and the second known example I have personally seen. The churn is an early form circa 1840s and bears his classic handle and one lug lifter handle. The churn also has three concentric lines for gallon capacity. This example is in a dark earthy truffle color alkaline glaze, that has great eye appeal. Condition is overall very good with some restoration to the rim where from normal use and age has had chips on inside and outside of the rim wall professionally restored, and are in a very good state of color and blending. Overall this is a very sought after form and being signed makes for a strong case for desirability in any southern collection. Standing: 14 1/2" Tall
