Outstanding Edgefield, South Carolina Five Gallon Dave Drake (1800-1870s?) Storage Jar with X on the shoulder. This is an outstanding plantation food storage jar by enslaved master potter Dave Drake. This jar is an unsigned example bearing his X mark, and classic form with a heavily coiled base all the way to the classic lug lifter handles and a pulled flared rim. Strong rich earthy green alkaline glaze. Quality collector grade example. Condition, has had two rim chips restored both chips were 1 1/2" wide and very shallow, note the restoration was done to museum standards and are very hard to notice. No cracks or other repairs. Fresh example from an Atlanta area collection. This example was found in a Plantations smokehouse along the Georgia – South Carolina state line years ago at a estate auction. Standing 14 1/2" T
