Southern Pottery & Folk Art Auction
Lot 38A:
Monumental 1820s Edgefield, South Carolina Pottersville Half Gallon Pitcher, that is just amazing. Slave made example with stellar form and outstanding oatmeal alkaline glaze that has great eye appeal. The pitcher has tooled rim and graceful shape with long pulled handle. This is a fresh example that came from an Athens Georgia estate (Gibson Family). Folks when it comes to the best, well one has to put this pitcher in its own league. I challenge anyone to find a better or fresher example. This one is stamped either a 1 or I to the left of the handle. Hands down one of the top pieces of Edgefield to cross the block of Cagle Auction Co. Condition, basically mint, only one glaze flake at base and is truly insignificant, this is one of the finest pitchers from Edgefield I’ve seen, just doesn’t get any better for early pieces. no chips, cracks or repairs. Examples like this don’t turn up for private sale or auction. Simply find another one folks. Standing 8 5/8" Tall
Condition: Condition, basically mint, only one glaze flake at base and is truly insignificant. Picture is blown up so you can see a better image of the flake.
