Southern Pottery & Folk Art Auction
Lot 39:
Stunning and highly significant Edgefield, South Carolina Reuben Drake Shop Four Gallon Jug, that is slave made and has just stunning eye appeal. This is an early Landrum shop jug with blue rutile heavy at handle and neck area. Also has one large slash and three smaller slashes at the base on the neck. No other marks found on the jug. The glaze is a very well fired lime alkaline glaze with a tooled collared mouth. Great form and truly a master potter’s work. Condition is excellent for age and wear with one small glaze flaking on the second collar of mouth, minor base chips that are typical again for the age and use of the vessel. This is the first known example of this potter’s work that has crossed the block at Cagle Auction. No cracks or repairs and is fresh from an Atlanta area collection. Simply find another one.
