Fall Southern Pottery & Folk Art Auction
Lot 37:
Description
Edgefiled South Carolina 4gal Storage Jar. Slave made with lug lifter handles, this jar is fresh form the J. Belknap Smith Plantation in Wilkes Co. Georgia. The jar shows strong form of Landrum shop 1830-40 and has four punctate (dots) in a vertical line for gallon capacity. This jar was more than likely made by Dave Drake enslaved potter (Dave the Slave) and shows the strong form that points to Daves work. The jar is in as seen condition with rim damage, from age and use. The jar has no cracks or any other damage. Prime candidate for study or restoration. Also note the two concentric lines (band) at mid section which is very unusual and to my knowledge the only one I have seen in person. Also the strong again handprints of the master potter (Dave Drake) at the base which just gives the perspective of how large Daves hands were. No repairs of cracks. Standing14 1/2" Tall
Condition: As Found rim damage, repair free and crack free.
